Department of Justice extends Title II compliance date

The U.S. Department of Justice published a rule Monday extending the deadline to comply with the changes to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by one (1) year. The new compliance deadline for state and local government organizations serving populations of 50,000 or more is now April 26, 2027 (previously April 24, 2026). 

Changes to Title II of the ADA set Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Version 2.1 Levels A and AA as the technical standard for state and local organizations’ digital content and digital services.  

In Massachusetts, the Enterprise Digital Accessibility Policy requires that all state digital content and services comply with WCAG Version 2.1 Levels A and AA today.  
 

This federal deadline extension does not change our goals or ongoing work to ensure all digital assets are accessible to everyone.

All state organizations must continue to:

  • Follow the Website Domain Policy
  • Implement the Digital Accessibility Statement on website footers (per previous instructions)
  • Meet all Digital Accessibility Requirements
